Smith withdraws from Quiksilver Pro Durban

Durban’s Jordy Smith, currently rated number ninth in the world on the elite Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour (WCT), has withdrawn his entry from the 2009 Quiksilver Pro Durban, set to take place at New Pier between 17 and 26 April. This was due to commitments to his sponsors to shoot a movie in the Mentawai Islands off Indonesia that clashes with the Quiksilver Pro Durban’s dates.

He was hungry to improve on his second place result and take home one of professional surfing’s most sort-after titles and has made his disappointment at not being able to compete in front of his home crowd and at his local surf spot.

"Jordy is really disappointed that he will be missing the Quiksilver Pro Durban," said his mother Luellen Smith, "but the opportunity to shoot this film in the Mentawais is an incredible one for him and he was faced with a tough decision.

Snoop Dogg latest to join the Slumdog Millionaire bandwagon

Controversial American rapper Snoop Dogg is the latest international celebrity to join the Slumdog Millionaire bandwagon. Soon after Pussycat Dolls recorded their version of the Oscar winning Jai Ho, the latest news is that Snoop Dogg has done something similar with the help of Tanvi Shah whose vocals appear on the original version of Jai Ho. Snoop Dogg was last in the news for recording the Singh Is Kinng title rap song with Akshay Kumar.

The track called Snoop Dogg Millionaire has Tanvi Shah singing samples over his rap.

Sushmita urges fans to vote

Actress Sushmita Sen says it doesn't matter whom people vote for, but it is important that everyone votes.

"Please vote for whoever you do, but please do vote," Sushmita urged her fans.

'I've been here 14 years of my life. I used to stay in Vasant Kunj (south Delhi) and it is such a touchy place. I've lived there so long. Coming to Delhi is like homecoming for me,' the former Miss Universe told.

Tamil activist on hunger strike

Tamil National Alliance member and former Sri Lankan MP Mr. M. K. Eelaventhan, is embarking on a hunger strike, demanding that the international community takes immediate action to stop the war against Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Eelaventhan has been in politics for sixty years, fighting for recognition of the political aspirations of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

In his own words, Mr. Eelaventhan says that the inaction of the international bodies and their failure to recognize the genocide committed against Tamils by the Sri Lankan Government,

Swamivel's School of Dance presents annual natya

Over 300 students from all over will be presenting modern, contemporary, classical and folk dance sequences to the latest film songs. Students learning these dances perform at various cultural functions throughout the year.

They perform for cultural organisations without fee. Some of the student’s choreograph dances for their school concerts. According to a parent of the dance school, Gus Reddy, "Dance is the best media for any children learning the correct form of Indian dance. I found out that through dance, my child learnt Indian ethics and background. Krish Swamivel, through his teaching of dance, inspires bhakthi in every student.” The students from the dance school, who have attended a dance programme in India in January 2009, will also showcase the dance movements they have learnt.

One on one with Mrs India South Africa

How have you contributed to the community?

For the past 18 years i have conducted 24 craft workshops. The aim of the workshops are to empower children with creative, entrepreneurial and life skills so that they develop holistically.

The programme teaches children the production of items and business theory, which gives them the confidence to start their own business. The launch of my women's club was designed to provide an away from home environment where women can be inspired and strenghtened.

What past experience have driven you to become a community worker?

Teaching in an impoverished community for many years has exposed me to children and adults living in poverty with all types of abuse and pain. I realized I could not change the world but could at least make a difference in their lives.
